How does it sound to have a fresh meal on the very first night of a wilderness trip? Perhaps you like packing a frozen steak in for that very first night around a campfire or maybe you enjoy that sweet taste of ice cream after a hard day of portaging? If a full cooler pack is too much weight or preparation, perhaps our Insulated Cooler Sleeve could fulfill that dream. The Insulated Cooler Sleeve is designed to keep a meal fresh past the 24 hour mark so a frozen meal could be tucked in with the rest of the dry foods and still be kept fresh for when its needed. The Insulated Cooler Sleeve is made up out of quilted insulation sealed by a hook-and-loop top to provided optimal temperature regulating potential. It is available in a larger or a smaller size.
In the spring of 2023, we were able to put our cooler packs and cooler sleeves to the test to see how long they were able to keep food fresh. We filled the packs with seven frozen nalgenes (representing food or ice packs frozen before trail) and the rest of the pack was filled with materials simulating a full food pack. We tested cooler sleeves in a blue barrel and in our Food Pack 68 with a rigid pack liner. We also tested our Cooler Pack 90 with leaving it sealed for the entire experiment and with opening it and removing contents three times a day simulating retrieving food from inside. The results were fascinating and showed the importance of keeping the pack closed as much as possible (benefitted by proper organization and efficient retrieval.) The Cooler Sleeve performed well and was able to keep food from beginning to spoil (40 degrees) for about 60 hours while inside a full food pack.
